“What’s the difference between worker’s compensation and social security disability?”

I have viewers who ask me about worker’s compensation.  “If I have worker’s comp does that entitle me to social security disability? If have have worker’s compensation does that mean I get it forever?”

Answer:  Social security disability and worker’s compensation have no relation to one another in terms of whether you get one or the other.  One’s run by the federal government (social security disability) and the other’s paid by your employer through work (worker’s compensation).

The first question, do you get it forever? If you have an established case you do get your medical benefits for life assuming you don’t settle the case out.

Second question do you get lost wages forever? No is the generally the answer.  That’s something you’ll need to discuss at length with your attorney when you’re involved in a worker’s compensation case.
